Open Source Best Practice Teacher

Breda, Netherlands

About the Role

Do you live and breathe the culture of collaborative development? OpenSource Science (OS-SCi) is seeking an Open Source Best Practice Teacher to teach students not just how to code, but how to be effective and respected members of the global FOSS community.

As a study coach, your role is to immerse students in the tools, etiquette, and philosophy of open source. You will guide them through using Git for version control, navigating platforms like GitHub, understanding software licensing, and making their first meaningful contributions to a project.

What You'll Do

  • Teach the principles and practical application of version control with Git (branching, merging, pull requests).
  • Explain the nuances of different open-source licenses (GPL, MIT, Apache, etc.) and their implications.
  • Guide students on community best practices: writing clear bug reports, contributing code, and participating in discussions.
  • Act as a study coach, reviewing student contributions and helping them navigate the social dynamics of FOSS projects.
  • Inspire students to not just use open source, but to become active contributors.

What We're Looking For

  • Verifiable, significant experience as a contributor to or maintainer of open-source projects.
  • Expert-level proficiency with Git and platforms like GitHub or GitLab.
  • A deep understanding of open-source culture, licensing, and governance.
  • A passion for mentoring and sharing the collaborative spirit of the FOSS community.

Bonus Points For:

  • Experience in a Developer Relations (DevRel) or Community Manager role.
  • Public speaking experience at tech or open-source conferences.
  • Experience starting and maintaining your own successful open-source project.
