NextCloud Hub 10

Nextcloud Hub 10: A Leap Forward in Open-Source Collaboration and Productivity

Nextcloud has unveiled Hub 10, the latest iteration of its open-source collaboration platform, packed with over 400 integration-ready apps, advanced AI tools, and significant performance enhancements. This release is designed to provide a seamless and highly integrated digital workspace, catering to users who value privacy and prefer to maintain control over their data without relying on public cloud services.

Understanding Nextcloud Hub

Before diving into the new features, it's essential to clarify the distinction between Nextcloud Files and Nextcloud Hub:

  • Nextcloud Files: This is a file synchronization and sharing software that allows users to host their cloud storage solutions. It focuses on core functionalities such as file storage, synchronization across devices, and sharing capabilities. For those interested in setting it up, a guide on how to install Nextcloud with Docker is available here.
  • Nextcloud Hub: This is an expanded version of Nextcloud that integrates a suite of collaboration and productivity tools, including Files, Talk, Groupware, Office, and Whiteboard, into a single platform. It transforms Nextcloud from a simple file-sharing solution into a comprehensive, self-hosted productivity and collaboration platform.

Key Highlights of Nextcloud Hub 10

Nextcloud Hub 10 introduces several groundbreaking features and improvements:

  1. Performance Boosts:
    • File uploads are now up to six times faster. For instance, a 10GB file transfer can be completed in about 45 seconds in high-speed scenarios, a significant improvement from the 195 seconds it took in the previous version.
    • Enhanced background process efficiency and better load management during video calls ensure a smoother overall experience.
  2. Enhanced Security:
    • End-to-end encryption options have been extended to include Nextcloud Talk calls, accessible through the new desktop client, and browser-based access to files.
    • Refined brute force protection allows administrators to set stricter or more flexible login attempt limits.
    • Hands-on Mobile Device Management (MDM) features enable organizations to control employee device security, enforce app protection through FaceID, disable file sharing if necessary, and restrict clipboard access.
  3. Design and Workflow Improvements:
    • Smart Dashboard Widgets: The Nextcloud Dashboard now unifies email, conversations, events, and even weather forecasts. A new Favorite Files widget makes it easier to access critical documents, while a Nextcloud Talk widget highlights recent chats and mentions.
    • Easy Meeting Scheduling: Users can plan online gatherings directly from ongoing chat discussions or Nextcloud Calendar events, reducing the typical back-and-forth of meeting scheduling.
    • Streamlined Team Management: Groupfolders are now called Team folders. Administrators can assign a Team folder to any newly formed Nextcloud Team, ensuring that the team, rather than an individual, owns the files.
    • Improved Productivity Tools: The Smart Picker extension offers handy text templates, and more powerful external app connections, such as Documenso for self-hosted digital signatures, streamline everyday tasks. The Nextcloud Assistant 3.0 harnesses AI to automate chores like email summaries, meeting transcripts, and text translations.
  4. Mobile and Desktop Enhancements:
    • Updated mobile apps for iOS and Android provide a cleaner, more consistent experience.
    • Desktop clients receive a native UI overhaul, offering better performance and security checks for large-scale deployments.
  5. AI-Powered Nextcloud Assistant 3.0:
    • This new feature incorporates "agency features" that allow the AI to take context from various apps—like files, chats, and contacts—and act on the user’s behalf. For example, the Assistant can create calendar events, provide condensed summaries of lengthy conversations, or help quickly translate foreign-language emails.

For detailed information on all changes, refer to the release announcement.

Nextcloud Hub 10 is available for download from the Nextcloud website. Users can install it using all-in-one Docker or VM images. The developers have also confirmed that a Nextcloud Enterprise edition is on the way once thorough testing and certifications are complete.
